Freelance Graphic Designer – Contract Position 

The CDA Institute is seeking a talented and reliable Freelance Graphic Designer to support our organization’s visual communications on a project-by-project basis. Our work includes national-level events, strategic communications, and digital outreach. We are looking for a designer who can translate complex ideas into clean, compelling visuals. 

The CDA Institute is a non-partisan, registered charity dedicated to advancing informed debate on national security issues, particularly those pertaining to national defence and the Canadian Armed Forces. We foster evidence-based, constructive dialogue to help policymakers, experts, and the public navigate today’s complex security environment. 

Role Overview 

The Freelance Graphic Designer will be responsible for developing visual assets that align with our brand identity and support a range of initiatives, including event promotion, reports, presentations, and digital content. This role is ideal for someone who excels in creative problem-solving, meets deadlines consistently, and is comfortable working collaboratively with a small, fast-moving team. 

Key Responsibilities 

  • Develop a brand book 
  • Design digital and print materials, including event graphics, social media assets, banners, presentations, reports, and infographics for flagship events 
  • Ensure all visual materials align with brand guidelines and project objectives 
  • Incorporate feedback quickly and professionally while maintaining high design quality 
  • Manage project timelines and deliverables independently 

Qualifications 

  • Proven experience as a freelance or in-house graphic designer (portfolio required) 
  • Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite (Illustrator, InDesign, Photoshop) and/or other design tools (Canva, Figma) 
  • Strong understanding of typography, layout, and visual hierarchy 
  • Ability to adapt designs for various platforms and audiences 
  • Excellent communication skills and responsiveness 
  • Experience creating assets for professional events, non-profits, or policy-related organizations is an asset but not required 

Contract Details 

  • Freelance; workload varies by project, with opportunities for recurring assignments 
  • Remote work with occasional virtual meetings 
  • Compensation based on experience and project scope
