Conference of Defence Associations Institute (CDAI / CDA Institute) is a a non-​partisan research organization with official charitable status, whose mandate is promote informed public debate on national security and defence issues. The CDA Institute fulfils its mandate by regularly publishing well-​researched strategic articles, blogs, analyses, Vimy Papers, and its ON TRACK journal.

The CDA Institute also champions and organizes many events & awards, including:

  • Ottawa Conference on Security & Defence: Ottawa’s largest security & defence conference held annually at the Château Laurier. The event attracts 400-500 participants, including students and members of the CAF.
  • Vimy Gala – held during the Remembrance Day weekend, the prestigious black tie event commemorates Canada’s fallen heroes and celebrates men and women serving today. The Vimy Award and the Nichola Goddard Award are presented.
  • Vimy Award recognizing a Canadian who has made an outstanding contribution to the security and defence of Canada and the preservation of our democratic values. Recipients of the Vimy Award are honoured at a gala dinner held annually in November at the Canadian War Museum.
  • Nicola Goddard Award – Captain Nichola Goddard was the first Canadian female soldier in a combat role killed in action (in Afghanistan on 17 May 2006). This award is about remembering Nichola’s vibrant spirit and celebrating others who live by Canadian values of inclusivity, innovation, ethical leadership and commitment – an award to recognize and honour a young innovator and trailblazer who has made a significant contribution to security and defence.
  • Annual Graduate Student Symposium – The symposium brings together Canada’s brightest young minds from across the country to present papers on security and defence issues before an audience that includes security experts and military personnel.
  • Expert Series – approximately 6 roundtable sessions are held per year on topics related to Canadian security and defence.

 

Research Communications Coordinator

The position is a part-time, out-of-office contract. Depending on performance and availability of resources, the contract may be amended to a full-time, on-site permanent position.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Design infographics for communicating the most up-to-date defence and security research to the greater public in cooperation with affiliated researchers and the executive director.
  • Design and carry out online strategies for communicating the most up-to-date defence and security research to the greater public in cooperation with affiliated researchers and the executive director.
  • Develop social media and web content & coordinate with Operations Coordinator for publishing.

Secondary Responsiblities

  • Coordinate affiliated researchers (fellows and research clusters) in cooperation with the CDA Institute Associate Editors.
  • Facilitate peer-review processes in cooperation with the CDA Institute Associate Editors.
  • Write occasional press releases & media advisories in cooperation with the Executive Director.

Required Skills

  • Excellent English language writing skills
  • Experience with and access to design software (i.e. Adobe Create Suite or other) – a portfolio may be asked.
  • University education in a pertinent field: fine arts, design, communications, political science, economics, security studies, international relations, sociology, etc.
  • Demonstration of a multifaceted skill set: i.e. candidates with a fine arts and design background will be asked to demonstrate their interest and knowledge world politics / candidates with arts and science background will be tested on their design and communications skills

Additional Assets

  • Excellent French language skills
  • Creativity, direction, ambition, and the ability to deliver with little supervision

Salary commensurate with experience.

Research Assistant in Defence Economics & Procurement

The position is a part-time, out-of-office contract. Depending on performance and availability of resources, the contract may be amended to a full-time, on-site permanent “Researcher” position.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Carry out research in the field of defence economics and procurement in cooperation with affiliated researchers and the executive director.
  • Work alongside the Research Communications Coordinator to design infographics and carry out online strategies for communicating defence and security research to the greater public.

Secondary Responsiblities

  • Coordinate affiliated researchers (fellows and research clusters) in cooperation with the CDA Institute Associate Editors
  • Facilitate peer-review processes in cooperation with the CDA Institute Associate Editors
  • Write occasional press releases & media advisories

Required Skills

  • Excellent English language writing skills
  • Graduate level education in economics or public administration

Additional Assets

  • Familiarity with defence procurement policies in other countries for comparative analysis
  • Excellent French language skills
  • Creativity, direction, ambition, and the ability to deliver with little supervision

Salary commensurate with experience.
